Track time with the timer

Start and stop the timer, pick a project and task, switch project without stopping, and what happens offline.

The timer is the simplest way to record work: press start when you begin, stop when you finish, and the time lands on your timesheet against the project you picked. It sits in the top bar on every page of the web app, and in the desktop agent’s window.

Who can do this:MemberEveryone whose tracking policy includes a timer (Manual or Hybrid mode). If your policy is Automatic, there’s no timer to start — see Automatic tracking.

Start the timer#

Quick start#

Choose Start timer in the top bar. The clock starts immediately on the project you used last time, so switching back to what you were doing is one click.

Start on a specific project#

  1. Open the start options

Choose the small arrow next to Start timer. A panel titled Start a timer opens.

  2. Pick a project, and a task if you want one

For the example: Project “Brand Refresh”, Task “Guidelines”. The task list only appears once a project is chosen, and tasks assigned to you are listed first.

  3. Add a note (optional)

The note field asks What are you working on? Notes appear on your timesheet and in approved-hours exports, so a short description helps your approver.

  4. Choose Start

The clock starts the moment you press Start. The top bar turns green and shows the running time and project.

Start a timer: pick a project, an optional task and a note.
FieldWhat it means
ProjectWhere the time is attributed. You only see projects you’re allowed to log time to.
TaskOptional. Splits a project into finer pieces. “Assigned to you” tasks come first.
NoteOptional free text shown on your timesheet and in exports.

Your organisation may require some fields

Your tracking policy can require a project, a task or a note before a timer starts. If something is required, the timer tells you what’s missing instead of starting.

Switch project without stopping#

Moving from one piece of work to another? While the timer runs, choose the Switch project button (the two arrows) next to Stop. Pick the new project, task and note, then choose Switch.

The current entry ends at that exact moment and a new one starts on the project you picked — no gap, no overlap, and no minutes lost between clicks. You’ll see “Switched to Brand Refresh” (or whichever project you chose).

Stop the timer#

Choose the stop button (Stop timer) in the top bar. The entry is saved with its start and end, and appears straight away in MeMy entries and on your timesheet.

One timer at a time#

You can have one running timer across all your devices. If you start a timer in the browser while one is running on your laptop, you’ll see A timer is already running with the name of the device it was started on. Stop it there, or here, first.

In the desktop agent the same situation shows a banner with Move tracking here, which stops the other timer and starts one on this device. See Use the desktop agent.

If you start without a project#

You can start a timer with no project at all. If your workspace or your admin has set a default project for you, the time goes there; otherwise it’s shown as Unassigned. You can attribute unassigned time later from MeMy entries with Attribute time.

Automatic tracking#

If your policy is Automatic, the top bar shows Automatic tracking instead of a Start button. The desktop agent records time during your capture window without you pressing anything. Working hours in an Automatic policy only decide when the agent may record — they are never used to judge whether you were “on time” or “present”.

Working offline#

  • In the browser, starting and stopping needs a connection. If you lose it, start or stop again once you’re back online, or add the time as a manual entry.
  • In the desktop agent, the timer works offline. Start, stop and pause happen instantly on your computer and are sent to the server when the connection returns.

What your manager sees#

What the member sees

Your manager sees your entries — project, task, note, start and end — on your timesheet and in reports, exactly as you see them in MeMy entries. A timer records time only; it doesn’t take screenshots or record apps unless your policy says so, and you can check what applies to you any time in MeMy data & privacy.

Questions#

I forgot to start the timer. Can I add the time afterwards?
Yes. Go to MeMy entries and choose Manual entry. See Review and fix your entries.
I forgot to stop the timer. How do I fix the end time?
Open the entry in My entries, choose Edit and change the end time. If your timesheet was already approved, saving sends it back for re-approval.
Why is there no Start button for me?
Your tracking policy is Automatic, so the desktop agent records time on its own during your capture window.
